Detach and delete an EBS volume

Last updated:2021-07-30 11:21:41

To attach an EBS volume to a new KEC instance, you must first detach the EBS volume from the original KEC instance.

Detach an EBS volume in the console

Procedure:

  1. Log in to the EBS console.

  2. On the EBS tab, find the EBS volume that you want to detach and choose More > Unmount in the Operation column.

  3. In the message that appears, check the warning message and click OK. Currently, you can only detach EBS volumes of the data disk type from KEC instances, whereas you cannot detach EBS volumes of the system disk type.

Precautions:

  • If you are using the Windows operating system, to ensure data integrity, we recommend that you stop all read/write operations on the file systems of the target EBS volume before the detachment. Otherwise, certain data will be lost due to incomplete read/write operations. Before the detachment, set the EBS volume to the offline state. Otherwise, you cannot attach the EBS volume to the KEC instance again without restarting the KEC instance.

  • If you are using the Linux operating system, follow these steps to detach the EBS volume from the KEC instance: Log in to the KEC instance. Run the umount command on the target EBS volume. Then, log in to the KEC console to detach the EBS volume. If you forcibly detach the EBS volume from the KEC instance without running the umount command, an error may occur when you shut down or restart the KEC instance.

  • In the Linux operating system, disk letters may change after you detach and reattach an EBS volume. You can restart the KEC instance to restore to the original disk letters.

Delete an EBS volume in the console

Unlike the detach operation, when you delete an EBS volume, the data stored on the EBS volume is also cleared. This operation may incur risks. Therefore, you must back up the data or confirm that you no longer need the data before you delete the EBS volume.

EBS volumes billed in Subscription mode cannot be deleted in the console. Instead, you can delete EBS volumes by calling API operations. After an EBS volume billed in Subscription mode is deleted, it will be retained in the recycle bin for seven days. After the retention period, the EBS volume and its data are permanently deleted and cannot be restored.

After an EBS volume billed in Pay-By-Daily-Config or Pay-As-You-Go (Monthly) mode is deleted, it will be retained in the recycle bin for 2 hours. During this retention period, data is not deleted and you can restore the EBS volume. After the retention period, the EBS volume and its data are permanently deleted and cannot be restored.

After an EBS volume billed in Pay-As-You-Go mode is deleted, it will not be retained in the recycle bin, and the EBS volume and its data are permanently deleted and cannot be restored.

Delete a single EBS volume

On the EBS tab, select the EBS volume that you want to delete and choose Operation > Delete.

Make sure that the target EBS volume is in the offline state on the KEC instance before you delete the EBS volume.

Delete multiple EBS volumes at a time

On the EBS tab, select the EBS volumes that you want to delete and choose Operation > Delete.

Permanently delete one or more EBS volumes at a time

After you choose Operation > Delete, a dialog box appears, where you can select the deletion mode for the selected EBS volumes. If you select Delete completely, all the selected EBS volumes, regardless of their billing modes, will be destroyed directly and not retained in the recycle bin, and data cannot be restored. Proceed with caution.
