How do 40-bit and 128-bit SSL certificates differ?

One main difference between a VTN40 server certificate and a VTN128 server certificate lies in the SSL encryption strength, that is, the length of the session key for an encryption process.

  • A VTN128 server certificate can be used to implement highly secure forced 128-bit encryption, regardless of whether the browser on the client supports 40-bit or 56-bit keys.
  • A VTN40 server certificate does not support SGC forced 128-bit encryption. It can be used to provide 40-bit to 128-bit encryption strength, depending on the key length supported by the browser.

Another main difference between a VTN40 server certificate and a VTN128 server certificate lies in the number of supported server platforms.
